I’ve always been overweight, and never found something that really worked for me to get weight off. I have run 2 miles per day for as long as I can remember, and rode my bike as transportation to work, school, and home, and nothing did the trick. I know there are no silver bullets for weight loss, but I figured that this amount of activity should be enough to keep the weight off.
Suddenly, my parents in law announced that they would be taking the whole family on a cruise. My wife and I got excited and started researching the shore excursions. We found a ropes course that sounded really fun, but there was a weight limit of 230lbs, and I weighed 257. I knew that if I wanted to participate, I had to lose more weight than I had before.
I started by upping the ante. I started running 5 miles every evening and watching what I ate. I tried to stop taking in cheese, salt, and my personal favorite, Chinese food. Where did I find time to start running an extra hour a day? I had to make the time by getting up off my duff. This was hard because we had just picked one of the best Dish TV packages, and I had to put TV on hold.
It’s funny, yet fantastic that I immediately started losing weight. I ended up getting down to 223 lbs, and accomplished my goal. The cruise was great, and best of all, I learned what works for me for weight loss.
Over the last couple years, I have experimented with the way my body deals with exercise, and have come to find out that when I run less than 5 miles per day, my weight doesn’t change. When I run over 5 miles per day, I see progress. I even stopped running during the winter, and biked 15 miles every day, and I still gained weight during the season.
I was very happy to start figuring out my body, and find out what works for me. For me, running just works if it’s over 5 miles.
